ABCs of AFOs: Toward an Evidence-Informed Understanding of Ankle-Foot Orthoses

$10.00 - $20.00
May 13, 2024 - 16:00 (EDT)
1 hour

Overview

We will discuss three concepts foundational to individualized orthotic management of neurological gait impairments: assessment, biomechanical optimization, and collaboration.

A better understanding of this topic can help clinicians to move away from traditional trial-and-error-based approaches to AFO management, to create client-specific goals and evaluate their effects based on current evidence.

This webinar is suitable for clinicians and students with an interest in gait and neurological populations, and a basic knowledge of AFOs.

Join the Neuroscience Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA) and presenter, Dr. Kyra Kane BScPT, MSc, PhD, for this live webinar: 'ABCs of AFOs: Toward an Evidence-Informed Understanding of Ankle-Foot Orthoses'.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to

  1. Describe an approach to improve objective assessment of a client’s gait pattern and appreciate how findings can guide the selection of AFO type and design.
  2. Explain why biomechanical optimization of AFO-footwear combinations should be considered a routine part of orthotic care.
  3. Appreciate the benefits of family- and client-centred multidisciplinary collaboration to set goals and improve mobility outcomes.

The Presenter: Dr. Kyra Kane BScPT, MSc, PhD

CPA’s goal is to provide exceptional service, valuable information and connections to the profession of physiotherapy, across Canada and around the world.

Neurosciences Division

Welcome to the Neurosciences Division (NSD), a not-for-profit division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA).

We are a national organization operated by volunteers with a passion for neurological physiotherapy. We connect physiotherapists working in neurological settings to learning opportunities and a community of colleagues across the country.

The Neurosciences Division (NSD) is a not-for-profit, volunteer-driven division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA).

Our Aim is to assist neuroscience physiotherapists and physiotherapy assistants in enabling their clients to reach their full potential and participation in their communities through assessment, treatment, assistance, consultation, education, and research.
