Overview

This course consists of 2 main components: An in-depth look at the hip joint from both a theory and practical perspective, and marketing skills for PTs.

In the first half of the course, the main focus is reinforcing knowledge of, assessing, handling, and treating the hip. Differential diagnoses of intra-articular, extra-articular, and hip “mimicking” conditions are all discussed. Lessons include: femoroacetabular impingement, osteoarthritis, labral issues, muscle function, and hip referral patterns. Information provided is supported with existing literature and visual aids using radiographic images.

Included in this section of the course is a practical demonstration of hip assessment and treatment, with explanations of key points and rationale. This section covers handling technique, improving patient comfort, and differentiating the presentation of hip impingement. Darryl discusses the idea that while assessment strategies of the hip can recognize a weakness, treatment exercises mimicking these positions may not be the most effective. For example, he introduces an approach to eccentric strengthening of the hip flexors that would be used after testing hip flexor strength in a concentric motion.

The second half of the course is designed to teach you how to position yourself in your current practice or community as a practitioner, understanding and maximizing your referral sources. Key topics include: focusing on what’s best for the patient, performance metrics, patient retention, marketing yourself and your skillset, and advertising. Learn to implement valuable practical strategies to increase revenue and grow your client base. Additionally, after completing the course, you will be provided with FREE marketing resources. Using these skills and resources, you will be able to attain a greater proficiency in your practice and provide a better quality of care to clients.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the participant will understand:

  1. How to demonstrate to your colleagues/referral sources that pelvic health is the missing link to every orthopaedic practice
  2. How to measure your worth and talk up your value with your clinic owner
  3. How to get buy-in from other physiotherapists and health care providers
  4. How to generate better referral sources and attract new patients
  5. Killer strategies to deliver value to potential new referral sources and patients
  6. Understand hip FAI assessment and treatment options

What "Managing the Hip Joint, and Marketing Your Skillset and Yourself as a PT" Students Have Said:

"I found the course quite helpful from a review standpoint for the mechanical assessment but more importantly, I feel better able to discern LBP or hip pain from a true PF dysfunction. And the module on SIJ “dysfunction” was also quite helpful as this is something that I have struggled with – clients with positive SIJ pain provocation tests but then what?

Another thing I found especially helpful was how you pointed out that we need to be careful not to pathologize the PF. I think this is something I would have tended to do in my pain clients (either pelvic pain or hip or LBP) now that I have this knowledge however I need to step back and approach the PF like any other muscle group that might be a contributing factor to LBP or hip pain.

I think that is the most important thing I took from that course and I am trying to keep it in mind with all of my clients – not just the pelvic clients. I have been making a concerted effort in the past year to improve clients’ self-efficacy and I believe this plays into that."
