Description:

In this Grand Rounds we will discuss an interesting case involving a 40 year old patient presenting with visual disturbances and facial pain triggered by neck rotation. Audience participation is encouraged.

The Orthopaedic Physiotherapy Grand Rounds is presented by the Adjunct Education Committee of the National Orthopaedic Division.

Case Presenter:

Melissa Venturuzzo  HonBSc, MScPT, FCAMPT

Melissa received her Honours Bachelor of Science in Human Biology from the University of Toronto in 2003, and her Master of Science in Physiotherapy from McMaster University in 2009. In 2016 she received her Advanced Diploma in Manual and Manipulative Therapy and became a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Physiotherapy. She is trained in acupuncture through the Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute, is certified in Integrated Dry Needling, and is a certified Nordic Pole Walking Instructor through Nordixx Pole Walking Canada.

Pierre Langevin, Pht, MClSc, FCAMPT

Pierre Langevin completed his physiotherapy training at Université Laval, Quebec, in 1997 and gained his Canadian IFOMPT credentials in 2002. He holds a Master of Clinical Science from University of Western Ontario completed in 2010. He is currently completing his PhD on clinical intervention of the neck and vestibular system on mild traumatic brain injuries. Pierre is the co-owner of Physio Interactive and Clinique Cortex. As a Clinical Professor and lecturer in physiotherapy at Université Laval, he has taught in that program since 1998.  He is sharing his professional time between clinical work, mainly with neck and back pain patients, teaching and engaging in clinical research on back and neck pain. He is an instructor, examiner, and the Credentials Chair for the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA) Orthopaedic Division. He has published scientific peer-reviewed papers and has been a presenter of scientific posters and podium presentations in provincial, national, and international congresses. He teaches 2 post graduate courses on evidence-informed practice for neck pain and concussion. Finally, he has received the 2017 Excellence Award and the 2020 Interprofessional Quebec Council Award of the Ordre de la physiothérapie du Québec.

Pierre Langevin est physiothérapeute gradué de l’Université Laval et Fellow de la Canadian Academy of Manipulative Physical Therapy (FCAMPT). Il détient une Maitrise Clinique en Science depuis 2010. Clinicien et copropriétaire des cliniques Physio Interactive et Cortex, M. Langevin est également professeur de clinique, chargé d’enseignement en médecine et adjoint aux affaires cliniques à la direction du département de réadaptation à l’Université Laval. Il est enseignant dans plusieurs cours de formation continue et a été conférencier dans plusieurs congrès provinciaux, nationaux et internationaux. Il a publié plusieurs articles scientifiques sur les atteintes cervicales et les commotions cérébrales. Il a dernièrement reçu une bourse de recherche clinique pour évaluer l’effet de différentes approches de traitement de la commotion cérébrale. M Langevin est le lauréat 2017 du prix Excellence de l’ordre de la physiothérapie du Québec et le lauréat 2020 du Mérite du Conseil interprofessionnel du Québec de l’ordre de la physiothérapie du Québec. Finalement, il est boursier du Fond de recherche du Québec en santé comme candidat au doctorat à l’Université Laval.

 

Rhonda Reardon, BSc(PT), BSc(Phys), MSc(RS), FCAMPT

Rhonda Reardon graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 1990 with a BSc(PT). She completed the Diploma of Advanced Manual and Manipulative Therapy with the National Orthopaedic Division of the CPA in 1996. In 2017 she completed a Masters of Rehabilitation Science at McMaster University. Her area of focus was mechanical neck pain in adults. She is a contributing writer to a systematic review looking at manual therapy as an intervention for the treatment of mechanical neck pain in adults compared to no treatment.

She is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Physiotherapy as well as an Examiner and Instructor for the Orthopaedic Division of the CPA. Since 1995 she has been a Part Time Instructor in the School of Physiotherapy at Dalhousie University. In 2016 she was the recipient of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association National Mentorship Award.

Rhonda created and currently instructs the course “TREATING THE NECK IN 2021: A Best Practice Approach For Physiotherapists.  She is currently the Manager and Head Physiotherapist of The Dalhousie Physiotherapy Clinic which supports the physiotherapy needs of the varsity athlete, Dalhousie community and community at large.

 

Bernard Tonks, BSc(PT), FCAMPT, Certified Vestibular Rehabilitation Physiotherapist

Bernard is a Physiotherapist with 35 years of experience in musculoskeletal and neurological rehabilitation. He graduated from the University of Toronto but after a few stints working around the country ended up on the West Coast of Canada. He has been assessing and treating clients with vestibular dysfunctions since 1993 and since 2012, his clinical practice has been exclusive to dizziness, vestibular disorders, and the management of dizziness in Post Concussion Syndrome. In 1997, he became a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Physical Therapists.

He has completed numerous courses in Vestibular Rehabilitation and in 2001, successfully completed a competency-based certification course in Vestibular Rehabilitation. Since 2000, he has been instructing courses in vestibular rehabilitation and concussion management throughout Canada as well as internationally. He has presented at multiple conferences on the topic of vestibular Rehabilitation. He is the founder and Director of the Dizziness & Balance Rehabilitation Clinic, Victoria, BC Canada.
